Tips To Prepare For Your Oral Surgery Procedure

June 22, 2019 By Angelina Cheel Leave a Comment

The thought of getting oral surgery scares a lot of people and causes anxiety. Some people get excited about getting new implants but can feel a bit nervous about the whole procedure. However, it can be a lot easier if you go in with a bit of preparation. If you are aware of what can be expected, you might feel a bit more at ease.

Listed below are a few tips that can help you prepare yourself for oral surgery.

Determining the Kind of Anaesthesia That Would Be Used

When opting for JMS Oral Surgery Dallas, it is important to determine the kind of sedation that would be used. The kind of sedation usually depends on the type of procedure that is being performed. Local anesthesia would be used for simpler extractions. However, an IV or oral sedation might be used for more complex procedures. You might want to consult your dentist to determine this. With local anesthesia, you would be able to drive back home all by yourself. With IV or oral sedation, you might need the help of a friend or a family member to take you back home.

Avoid taking Solid Food before the Procedure

Your doctor would tell you about this but, it is advisable to avoid eating any solid food. Most dentists, at times, would tell you to avoid drinking or eating anything at all on the night before the procedure. This is recommended so as to reduce the chances of aspiration. This is a rare but rather serious complication of sedation wherein the contents of the stomach fills into the lungs.

Asking the Dentists If You Should Stop Taking Certain Medications

When you opt for JMS Oral Surgery Dallas, the dentist would ask you if you take any kind of medication on a regular basis. This is necessary as there might be some medications which would have to be stopped before the oral surgery. For instance, most of the people who take blood thinners like Coumadin, Warfarin or Plavix are required to stop taking these medication at least three days before the oral surgery takes place. You might also need to consult the doctor who prescribed you these medications to avoid any complications.

Give Time to Yourself

On the day when the oral surgery is actually going to take place, arrive about half an hour prior to the given time. This would give you the time to prepare yourself and adjust to the environment and also complete any paperwork that might have been left.

Preparing for the Recovery

The recovery would depend on the procedure that you have undergone. Ensure that you have ice packs handy which would help in reducing the swelling. You might also be required to rinse your mouth with salt water after a day. Antibiotics may also be prescribed. Soft food would be the best in such situations and would help in healing.

Preparing adequately right from the very beginning would ensure that the process goes on really smoothly. Ask your dentist regarding any doubts or questions that you might have regarding the procedure to have a clear idea of the whole thing.
